Reptile Care

Having a reptile as a pet might sound like fun, but what most people don’t realize is how involved it can be. Each type of reptile requires varying housing and nutrition.

Enclosures are important to reptile care. Glass aquariums are one of the most common setups for reptiles…and yes, size does matter…and yes, the bigger the better. It’s important to make sure they have all the essentials including adequate substrate, or flooring; water access; a lighting source; and proper temperature and humidity. Also, be sure to provide hiding areas. It’s important to do your research to see what type of enclosure your pet needs.

Nutrition is also an important part of reptile care. Some eat meat, while others eat veggies, and there are those that even eat both. Always offer a variety. Food for some species requires dusting with calcium and/or vitamin powder. Reptiles also don’t eat as often as we do; weekly feedings for some are okay. Once again, it’s important to do your research so you know what type of food your pet needs.

I don’t know if you see the recurring theme, but do your research!!!  Reptiles are cool. They can make wonderful hypoallergenic pets, but they have specific requirements for care and some are more involved than others. If these requirements are not met, they can get sick. So before you buy a reptile, see what type of care is involved so you can enjoy a happy and healthy pet!
